Haoran Chang
Haoran Chang is a Ph.D. student at York University Cinema and Media Studies. He is also a multimedia artist, researcher, and experimental game designer focusing on the liminal relationship between the virtual and reality. His Ph.D. dissertation focuses on the VR game as a healing medium through the lens of Eastern Chinese Traditional Medicine philosophy to reconsider the relationship between body and environment with the mediation of technologies. He has exhibited works in various locations virtually and physically, including the CICA museum in South Korea, Walter Otero Contemporary Art in Puerto Rico, Vox Populi in Philadelphia, Hunan Museum of Art in China, and many more. He published papers in peer-reviewed journals like Refract and Virtual Creativity. He has presented in many different institutions, such as Johns Hopkins University, University of California Santa Cruz, Shanghai Institute of Visual Art, Université de Montréal, and Ohio University. He is also the founder of the Mixed Reality collective Chameleon Gallery and the lead of two projects published on SteamVR: Endless Become and Chameleon Gallery. His most recent creative game project includes Retelling Stories of Old District (2023), a site-specific board game to reenact the stories in Changsha, China, and Seize(2023), an AR doodling game to memorialize the lockdown in Shanghai in 2022.
